At my most recent exhibition at Lisa Harris Gallery (April 2011), I gave an hour-long talk on the “In Sunlight” series. This was a special opportunity for guests to get a “studio perspective” on the painter’s creative process — painting from photos, digital studies, paint handling, composition, and color.
Parts 1 through 4 in HD video are now available for viewing.
Part 1 covers the paintings Snow Rivers in Half Light and Pinnacle Peak, Last Light.
Part 2 covers the quartet of brilliant “yellow” paintings for which the series is named.
Part 3 covers the paintings Upper Ridge in Snow, Upper Ridge at Dusk, and White Space
Part 4 covers the paintings December Peak and Ascent, followed by a Q&A session
In the “In Sunlight” series I am experimenting with alternative ways to capture the illusion of natural light. In many paintings (discussed in Part 2), I almost completely abandon traditional value relationships in favor of saturated colors, modulated primarily with subtle hue and temperature differences. Excellent! These videos should be required viewing for anyone about to pick up a paintbrush. You were clear, plain speaking, very informative and offered a special insight into what makes a successful painting. Thank you for being so generous. It’s been most helpful to me.
These are great video lessons! Fun to hear about Mitchell’s process for his painting, and he is a natural teacher; wants to educate his audience. I agree how the shapes in a composition are most important!
Hi Mitchell,
Loved the video about you speaking about your mountain peak series. I feel you did capture the fox with all of them. beautiful sense of color and design. What really intriqued me was your cropping of the photo reference. I will now reevaluate my own photos to see what Ive been missing as far as creating better paintings.
All the best,
Sal
I am so glad I stumbled on these videos and your blog. They are a great way to clarify and focus what you share in your book. I believe that some of the questions I have been struggling with have their core in these lessons: perhaps I will now be able to move forward from my “stuck” place in solving them! Thank you for sharing your process and insight with us so generously.
